A History of the Fields Family

(see pictures)

William Harley Fields was born July 15, 1888, at Lowry City, Missouri, son of William Henry Fields and Ida May Homes. William had three sisters Dela, Beaulah, and Ida. His father William Henry was a jeweler and clock maker. As a youngster William H. Fields played in a marching band. He was an accomplished musician, playing trumpet and trombone. He started a family in Missouri, had two sons, but due to the development of tuberculosis he migrated to Colorado for his health. He first settled near the town of Nunn, Co., Where he worked for the Wheeler Ranch organization, where he participated in the last well-known cattle roundup in eastern Colorado in 1919. This roundup was called the Wheeler Windmill Roundup. Marguerite Katherine Krieger, lived at Nunn, where she meet William H. Fields in 1919. Her parents Phillip and Christina Krieger came to this country from Germany, prior to 1900, first settling in Lincoln, Nebraska. They later moved to Walla Walla, Washington where marguerite was born on February 18,1903.at the age of 3 marguerite and family of three brothers, John, Karl, and Jake, four sisters, Esther, Katherine, Christina and Elizabeth, moved to the Windsor area, where they farmed, later moving to the Nunn area. Marguerite and William's romance began at the church in Nunn, where William sang in the choir. On Sunday, as Marguerite was passing the collection plate, William dropped an engagement ring in the collection plate for her. William later moved to the Denver area, where he attended barber school. At the age of 17, Marguerite moved to Denver and they were married on June 22, 1920 at Littleton, Co. They lived in the Morrison, Evergreen area, later moving to Gill and LaSalle, making their final move to Milliken in 1935, where William opened his barber shop, located at 904 Broad Street, downtown Milliken. They made their home above the shop, with six children, also living in the back room of the barbershop. Later moving to the boss's place, down by the saloon and junkyard. They moved to the Mellon house, across from the school, and lived there for many years. In 1953 William retired from barbering due to ill health and sold his shop to Clyde Bejarano. After his retirement from the barbershop William secured the position of deliverer of the mail from the train station to the post office. Since he had no car, he designed a special two-wheel cart made from two bicycle wheels, so he could carry the mailbags. He decided since he worked for the government and was delivering the mail, he had as much right to occupy the road as any one with a car, so down the road he went with his cart full of mail. William enjoyed his simple life in Milliken, and enjoyed his daily walks to town. He was even able to make a trip with his wife, Marguerite to California to visit his son living in the Canoga Park area. His health began to decline, and on February 17, 1958 he passed away. He was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Milliken. He was survived by his wife, Marguerite and all six of his children, he was also survived by 12 grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. Della young of Ord, Nebraska, Mrs. Beaulah Link of Broken Bow, Nebraska and Mrs. Ada Cone of Osceola, Missouri. William was buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley, Co.

Marguerite Fields worked at numerous and varied jobs, including taking in washings, baking pies for the restaurant, helping people with spring cleaning, seamstress for many Milliken ladies, cutting potatoes on the farm and checking at the potato dock. In 1949 the school lunch program was started at Milliken, and Marguerite was hired as head cook working with Mrs. Ruth Malik and sometimes with Mrs. Kingham. She was employed with the lunch program for 20 years, and was retired at the age of 65. This was the worst day of her life, as she loved all the children at the school and she knew she would miss them so very much. During her last 5 years at the school she would also travel to Idaho Springs, Co. For the summer program, cooking for the Campfire Girls and also the American Red Cross summer camp. She loved all the kids there. What a time we had moving her furniture up the stairs each summer putting everything in one room so she could rent her home to some family that would be going to summer school in Greeley. After her retirement from the school lunch program she moved to Greeley where she was employed at the Frank Weller home as a companion, working until she was 72 years of age. Then moved into an apartment at 1017 18th. Ave. to be close to her daughter Margie and family. She still enjoyed cooking and was always eager to fix those big meals for her family. She loved to play cards with her brothers and sisters and enjoyed traveling. She even made a trip overseas with her granddaughter Mardell. Marguerite enjoyed life lived each day to the fullest. She was very kind hearted and was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Milliken. Marguerite passed away on June 1, 1981 at the age of 78, she will be remembered by her children and grandchildren as the best mom and grandmother, and for giving of herself to each of them. She was survived by two daughters, three sons, 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister. She was buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Greeley, Colorado.

In 1949 the Bisline home located at 209 Kathleen was up for sale, and with the help from daughter Dorothy and son Harley they were able to purchase this home that was originally owned by Ernest Heflebower. This house was on land that had been a potato field when it was purchased as part of a future town site by the Denver Laramie Realty Company. To our family this was a real mansion on the hill. It had two large rooms downstairs, and two bedrooms and a large hallway room, which could be used as a bedroom or living room upstairs. It had a small cellar, accessible from the house, and a bathroom with hot and cold running water, a bathtub and an inside toilet, large family style kitchen, what a mansion it was!

Stories relating to Doris & Elmer Kaiser; from Doris' brother Jack: I Jack Fields was chosen to be ring bearer for their wedding even though I might have been a little old for the job, being 7 years of age. I enjoyed being a member of the wedding, as I loved my sister very much and wanted to be close to her as long as I could. I borrowed my cousin's suit for the occasion, since I had none of my own. I took very good care of it, except, the lapel flower they gave me seemed to be a little small, and we had much bigger and more beautiful flowers in our rose garden, from which I made my selection, bad luck that it was a little muddy that day!

Sherry & Gail remember a great experience with their family as their dad Elmer decided to build a camper on the back of his 49 Chevy pickup, he built this at his fathers Texaco station at Milliken, the family would take it up the Pouder every chance they could. Sherry and Gail would ride in the back. It was always rough and bumpy and everything would fly out of the cupboards they had a ball talking, laughing and drank Shasta all the way up. One summer they took the pickup to Yellow Stone Park, their mom fixed a great breakfast even the bear smelled it. He put his huge paw right in the window screen. Their mom opened the door and threw the sausage out as far as she could throw it and dad ran around to the pickup and we tore out of there as fast as we could!

From Doris's sister Margie: how I remember all the great times we had at home with you playing the piano. What a great time the family had as we were growing up. We had very little money for entertainment but we had each other, and how fun it was when we all gathered around that piano and sang. Our dad had such a great voice even after he had lost a lung, and how much work you managed to get out of by just sitting down at the piano. Every one would pitch in and do your chores just to hear that great music.

Another great trip was when sherry won the five-state champion typing contest that was sponsored by Strayer Junior College. Sherry, Gail and their mother Doris were sent to Washington D.C. for Sherry's reward. They toured the town, year 1955

To my beloved grandma Fields: she was the best! She always helped me with my homework and we played a lot of scrabble. She showed me how to make kraut- burgers. I worked side by side with her one summer at a Girl Scout camp, called Camp Wilaha. We were cooking in the kitchen. She was the cook and actually I was her helper. She was cooking for the kids, whom she always loved and they always loved her! From granddaughter Gail Vise.

William Harley Fields jr. Born February 2, 1930, at LaSalle, Colorado graduated from Milliken High School in 1948. Harley was always the family lifesaver. Harley loved horses and would train horses for other people. One of the occasions where Harley showed his family generosity involved his one horse he owned named Prince. Our father was the barber in Milliken and did not make much money. The state had decided that it was unsanitary to use the same mug and brush for shaving everyone and they decreed that all barbers would henceforth have to use lather generated by a machine called a Latherizer. This machine cost $40.00 and with dad getting about 50 cents a shave, this presented a real dilemma for the whole family. Harley came to the rescue, and sold his horse Prince to pay for this Latherizer. He was also the one that came to the family rescue when it came to buying the house we owned at Milliken. He worked at the sugar factory and gave almost all of his salary to this endeavor. Harley joined the U.S. Marine Corps in August 1950 through May 1952. He was sent to Korea and Japan, spent time in the hospital there due to illness he contacted in combat. Jack Eugene Fields born January 22, 1937, at Milliken, Co. Jack told us this story about his wayward ways: when I was maybe ten years old, and we were still living in Melon's house across from the school, myself and a couple of the clever young lads I spent time with, discovered that Mr. Biseline, who lived 2 blocks from our house, had a patch of watermelons hidden inside a few rows of corn. We decided that we would like a sample. As luck would have it, Mr. Biseline came on the scene at the least opportune time. We were a lot faster than he was, and managed to escape unscathed. There was one small problem, when I got home, I realized that I had forgotten my bicycle, which was now in the possession of said Mr. Biseline. I was left without any alternative but to relate the story to my sympathetic mother, and enlist her aid in retrieving my bicycle. Our visit to Mr. Biseline was a sad and stirring event for all three of us. That was one of the important lessons of my childhood.
